The flashlight turns on automatically when you're in a dark room where you wouldn't otherwise be able to see, so it turns on by itself.

Instructions for decoding the codes:
1. Go to the bedroom, and somewhere in there you’ll find a piece of paper.
2. Then look in your inventory—you’ll see symbols and numbers there.
That piece of paper serves as a decoder.
3. Exit the inventory and go look for a code.
4. Okay, you’ve found it—write it down on a real piece of paper.
5. Now go back to the inventory and decode it.

Hey guys, how do you use the flashlight in this game?
